Is It Time to Stop Tinting Your Hair?

Dyeing one’s hair has been around for centuries.  If a lady wasn’t using henna or indigo, she might have used turmeric, black walnut hulls, or red ochre.   Synthetic dyes trace their history back to the 1860s, But it was in 1907 that Eugene Schueller, the founder of L’Oreal, who made synthetic hair dye marketable. Have We Totally Lost Touch with Healthy Eating?

If only we could all live intuitively, make better decisions about what we eat, get active, live a de-stressed life, we might not have such a large percentage of Americans being overweight and obese.  We’re seen by the world as a land of plenty, wide open spaces, jump in your car and go wherever you want, and access to anything one’s heart could desire.  Yet, I doubt if any country would take on our weight problem issues, issues that are probably the result of being in a land of plenty.  I fear that the decisions people are making are just exacerbating the problem.

Italians Eat a Lot of Pasta — Why Aren’t They Fat?

I just came back from a great trip to Italy.  Let me tell you — if you want true Italian food and amazingly delicious food, you have to go to the country of origin.  Sadly, Americans have been made to think that Italian food must be loaded with garlic and onions to be “authentic”.  Not true.  As we all know, Italy is the land of pasta. And, by the way, it’s more than okay to eat pasta.  I traveled from the north of Italy to Rome and tried so many different types of pasta dishes and never gained a pound!  And it looks like Italians aren’t gaining that much from eating pasta either.

Tripping Over the Truth of Diets

I recently read a great book by Chip and Dan Heath called “The Power of Moments”.  They dive into the subject of making life more meaningful by increasing the number of memorable moments we have in life.  When you think back on the years you’ve lived, how many memorable moments were there?  The “highlights” and “lowlights” of our lives often are a small percentage of the number of days we’ve lived.  The Heaths believe that we don’t have to wait for these times to happen.  We can actually create those moments and not let it be happenstance.

Do Overweight People Eat More Because They Get More Pleasure from the Taste of Food?

An interesting article appeared in the May 2019 issue of the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  Researchers at the University of Iowa studied 290 adults of various weights to determine whether taste perception and food enjoyment was a result of one’s level of weight.  Of the study population, 56% had a normal body mass index (BMI), 27% were overweight, and 17% were obese.  Do understand that 290 people is not a large sample size for a study.  So don’t take this as gospel truth, just an interesting thing to consider.

Fat Activism and Self-Esteem – Maybe Maslow Had It Right

If Abraham Maslow were alive today, what would he think of fat activism and self-esteem?  Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist in the early 20th century. He is best known for creating the “hierarchy of needs” pyramid.  He used the structure as a way of ascertaining a person’s psychological health based on fulfilling certain innate human needs.
